How To Stain A Concrete Floor

So anyone with a garage, sunroom, basement, porch, or patio with a concrete floor should seriously consider this super simple process that you can do without fancy tools or equipment. Here are the simple steps to get a freshly stained concrete floor:

Sounds easy, right? Beyond simply selecting your stain color, you'll need to choose between semi-transparent or solid stain. A solid stain will have a more paint-like finish, while a semi-transparent will still let the color variation of the concrete show through. For our project, we chose a Behr Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain in "Tuscan Gold" to give the unfinished concrete floors on our sunroom a warm honey-gold wash:

Step 2: Clean and prepare your concrete floor

Just like a traditional painting project, you'll want your surface to be thoroughly cleaned before you begin. If you're staining an outdoor area like a concrete patio or walkway, consider using a pressure washer (we love this guy!) Our floor was in great shape, but this is also the step you'll want to fill or repair any cracks (using a product like this crack repair sealer or thinner concrete putty). Step 3: Apply your dye

While stains are often applied using a paint sprayer or pump sprayer, you can also use a trusty brush and paint roller. The key to any application technique is to keep a "wet edge", which means that you only layer your new stain on an edge that hasn't dried yet. Applying stain to a "dry edge" is equivalent to applying two coats, which can result in a darker or less transparent finish in those areas. With a semi-transparent stain, the color darkens or “deepens” with each coat, so keep applying fresh coats until you are happy with the result. Step 4: Seal your concrete

The final step is to steal your stained floor once the final coat is dry. Concrete sealers come in a variety of finishes, from low-gloss sealers (which will give finished floors a matte or dull finish) to gloss or "wet" sealers that really add a lot of shine. These will be applied the same way as your stain, just make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions and that the stain you choose is suitable for application over stained concrete. But about two years after completing the project, we decided we wanted a more chocolate brown color to better match the floors in our home. We tried a darker semi-transparent stain (a color called "Loden") on our existing floor and it gave us the streaky, almost dirty results seen below. Later we also painted a decorative stencil onto this same floor to add even more interest to what was once a plain, boring concrete floor.
