Sliding doors are a practical and stylish way to complete a bedroom, living room, kitchen or playroom renovation. Installing Ikea Pax Doors As Sliding Closet Doors (Ikea Hack)

In that post, I mentioned that we got rid of some hideous metal bifold doors on two side-by-side cabinets in our kitchen. Here is a photo that shows more clearly how the cupboard opening goes from top to bottom:

Since there was no overhang, sliding doors or barn doors were also available as options. It's like greeting guests with, "Hello, welcome home, LOOK AT OUR PANTRY CLUTTER."

Eventually, we decided that there was no other solution than to frame part of the upper opening of the closet. We enlisted the help of Ken's stepdad, who is a handyman, to do the framing, as it was way outside of our comfort zone (especially if we wanted it to look pretty). Before sanding and painting, we drilled holes for the Ikea Pax Doors top track, in case we messed up, we wouldn't have to repaint. Hence the unfinished paint in some of the images below which illustrate the installation

Ikea Pax Door Top Track Customization

First, we had to remove a “lip” from the Pax door track so the track was flush against the wall. Installation of Ikea Pax doors as sliding closet doors

Next, we installed the top rail on the new closet frame overhang. These Pax doors, when assembled, were the HEAVIEST THINGS WE HAVE EVER PURCHASED AT IKEA. We had actually assembled the Pax doors earlier and went to test them on the upper track, and it was almost too heavy to move around for testing purposes. Next, we removed the empty frames from the track, then installed the class panels into the frames, following the instructions that came with the Pax doors. Next, we carefully moved the doors into the kitchen (wow, heavy!). (We also include things like the hacksaw option, as it's more economical).
